In July of 2021, the Government of the Republic of Lithuania appointed Energy Cells as the operator of the storage facilities for the provision of electricity from the instantaneous isolated mode reserve. Energy storage system will ensure the security of supply of Lithuania’s energy system and the possibility to operate in an isolated mode.
Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant provides energy storage, averaging electrical demand throughout the day. The pumped storage plant has a capacity of 900 MW (4 units, 225 MW each). Kaunas Hydroelectric Power Plant has 100 MW of capacity and supplies about 3% of the electrical demand in Lithuania.
The offshore wind farms, which will begin to operate by 2035 in the part of the exclusive economic zone of the Republic of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea near Palanga with a capacity of approximately 1,4 GW, are expected to generate up to 6 TWh of green electricity per year, which would meet up to a half of Lithuania’s current electricity demand.
As Lithuania aims to generate all of its electricity from renewable sources by 2050, the development of wind energy will be crucial.
“Although the average electricity consumption in Lithuania is around 1,500 megawatts, the installed capacity of both solar and wind power plants is expected to exceed 2,000 megawatts in 2025, enabling surplus electricity to be stored and supplied to consumers during peak hours”, E energija group’s CEO Gediminas Uloza noted in a social media post.
The Association advocates decarbonization and decentralization of the Lithuanian energy production sector, the use of local renewable resources, the increase of energy independence through wind energy, and the implementation of the European Union's renewable energy policy.
